I watched this show for the second time, as a refreshing break in my DC movie binge. It’s strange that the Watchmen franchise is part of DC, because it is all around great, but I’ll take it.
It’s surprising that this show managed to be based on an excellent movie, feel completely different, and yet still be excellent itself. The characters are generally all just vigilantes or cops dressed as vigilantes, but there is still a light superhero element to the show. It’s almost more of a sci-fi, historical fiction show than a superhero show. Regardless, it is unique.
Jean Smart and Regina King are excellent. Tim Blake Nelson, Lou Gossett Jr and Jeremy Irons are (as always) great, and the show does an awesome job of devoting episodes to characters so they feel well developed, while also always staying focused on the main plotline. It’s just an excellent show in every way.
The strange thing is that the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is low, but I’m pretty sure that’s just due to the political nature of the show. The MAGA internet trolls must have been upset as the show that depicts Fred Trump as a villain and the Tulsa Massacre that is generally ignored as part of American history.
Either way, I was tempted to give the show a 10, and am only giving it a rating of 9 (excellent) by the slightest of margins.
