After taking a nice break, I decided Hacks was good enough to finish watching and that I should do it before I forgot everything from the first two seasons. And wouldn’t you know it, season 3 is probably my favorite so far. I ended up still giving it the same rating as the first two, a 6 out of 10, but I considered kicking it up to a 7.
This season cuts out my least favorite part of the first two, the unnecessary awkward Meet the Parents style of tension that makes me want to hide under a pillow. There’s also a lot less of the characters being unnecessarily mean to each other to create artificial drama. On the flip side, this season might be the least funny of all. So, although the worst parts of the show are gone, there weren’t many high points to celebrate either. The characters continue to be strong, and Ava and Deborah’s relationship is still believable and fun to root for. The writing is solid, but overall this season did not have enough strong points to get a higher rating than 6 out of 10. It’s a solid season, but I’m not sure I can call it good.
