My tolerance for bad movies continues to grow as I wade through this mess that is the DC universe. I remember absolutely hating this movie when I first saw it, in part because of how much I enjoyed the first Wonder Woman. Now, after what I have seen recently, I was pleasantly surprised that this movie is just mediocre, not bad or awful. I give it a 4.
The characters are fine. Kristen Wiig’s Barbara has some decent character development, and it is fun seeing Chris Pine reprise his role in the ’80s even if it is basically just a direct steal from Captain America. Gal Gadot is also fine, and I appreciate that Pedro Pascal is one of the more likable villains in the entire DC universe. He has some shred of humanity, which is rare.
Other than the scenes where Chris Pine is exploring the ’80s, there is not much that is actually enjoyable in the film. Kristen Wiig isn’t funny, and Pedro Pascal’s bit gets overdone after the first hour. There could be some heavy editing there and nothing would be lost from the film. The fight scenes are pretty boring, and some of the funniest parts of the movie are clearly unintentional. At one point Wonder Woman jumps off the ground and lassos an airplane, and I just about lost it. Then they just go all in, and have her lasso a cloud and then a lightning bolt. Is there any reason for it? Does she need to learn how to fly, or to make a plane invisible? Nope! Does it make the movie better to give her these additional powers? Nope! Once again, the editing really could have helped protect the writers from themselves, but they were asleep at the wheel.
As stated above, this movie is mediocre. 4.
