My wife and I chose Ice Age to be our daughter’s third movie ever. It’s one of my wife’s favorite kids movies, and I have fond memories of seeing it in the theaters when it came out. For the most part, the movie holds up well.
The animation itself looks antiquated, which isn’t surprising for a 3D movie from the early 2000’s. It still looks good, and has a variety of prehistoric creatures for my daughter to get excited about. The movie is mainly a family-friendly adventure story with comedy a few dramatic turns. Each of these elements are good, but watching it again I realized that the adventure, comedy, and drama are more good than great. There’s also not a musical component. I also never realized, until I had a small child, that the musical element of a Disney movie could be such a big deal. I’ve traditionally enjoyed some of the non-musical Disney films (Emperor’s New Groove, Atlantis) more than the musicals, but those films will take a back seat to the musicals for at least the next decade. Being a parent is often a kick in the nuts, but I do learn a lot of perspective.
Anyway, Ice Age has a strong cast, fun characters, and is an easy watch with kids even without the musical element. It’s lovely to find a movie that I can enjoy that also is good for a two-year old. It’s a good movie and gets a 7.
