I saw Green Lantern back when it first came out, and I have to admit I didn’t hate it as much as everyone else. Watching it again, it is par for the course for a DC movie – mediocre, or a 4. It’s shocking that Rotten Tomatoes is so aggressively harsh when compared to the reviews for Aquaman, Shazam 2, Blue Beetle and others which are all even worse movies.
The characters are not particularly interesting, which is surprising given the strength of the cast. Tim Robbins, Angela Bassett, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong… this movie squanders a lot of talent. Ryan Reynolds has his moments, but for the most part the characters in the movie are just passable.
The plot revolves around Green Lantern’s will versus his fear, which could be kind of interesting. Instead, they briefly show him being afraid at one time and then just say things about will conquering all and whatever. Then, there is a (thankfully) short CGI fight between Reynolds and a blob monster, but I won’t spoil for you who wins! The suspense must be killing you.
It’s not awful, but there are many better options out there. This movie is a 4. If you have streaming access, pick something better.
