I’ve seen Birds of Prey once before and enjoyed it immensely. I’ve been waiting for this nice break in the DC movie run, as this movie continues to be one of the strongest they put out.
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is excellent. Ewan McGregor also plays an awesome villain, which I am not sure I have seen elsewhere. Winstead is great, Rosie Perez is Rosie Perez, and Jurnee Smollett does a good job with her role. The kid in the movie is definitely the weak link in a team of strong actors, but it doesn’t really detract from the movie. Most importantly, there are zero scenes involving Jared Leto ruining the movie as The Joker, even though he is frequently mentioned. Other than Harley Quinn, none of the characters ends up having any real depth, but this movie isn’t aiming for a ton of depth in the supporting cast.
Birds of Prey is a simple plot that leads to humorous moments and fun action scenes, led by a few strong actors. This formula works well, and there are few moments in the film where I am not highly entertained.
It’s a great movie, I give it an 8.
