I realized that I’m currently in the perfect position to work through some painful sets of movies that I, for some reason, feel inclined to review. I’m doing a fair amount of nights with my new baby, so maybe some bad movies will help pass the time I guess? Either way, I’ve decided to start watching a variety of DC movies, and I’m beginning with the first ones I ever saw – the original Batman series. I remember enjoying this movie when it came out, and that the sequels get progressively more horrible. I figured it would be like slowly entering cold water. Little did I know, this was not the easy entrance I hoped for. This does not bode well for my next week of night shifts, as I work through the next three movies.
Before I review this one, I wanted to point out that I just watched Big Fish, which Tim Burton actually turned into a good movie somehow. I also love Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson in general, and have seen Kim Basinger do good work. That being said, other than Nicholson, everything in this movie is somehow both incredibly campy and boring. I enjoyed watching Jack Nicholson dance around to Prince and ham it up, but I think Keaton and Basinger slept through this film.
The story also just kind of stinks, but covering that requires some spoilers for those who haven’t gotten around to seeing this 35 year old film. Regardless, I remembered this movie being a 7 or something solid, but I struggled to give it a 5 and my most reluctant recommendation.
Spoilers
First off, how does Bruce Wayne not recognize his parents killer until he says the tagline? He’s been following him for awhile, he knows his parents’ killer was named Jack (according to the flashback), and they have all the same absurd mannerisms. I don’t understand the entire newspaper story line, as Vicky Vale basically walks up to Batman and they just fall in love for some reason. Her pictures are pretty irrelevant, as is her work with Knox, the other reporter.
Finally, justice for Bob. As the Joker’s #1 henchman, he deserved at least a mini boss fight like all the other rando goons at the bell tower.
