When Will Wight released a short story compilation set in the Cradle universe, I wasn’t all that excited. This format means that there’s no major plot line running through the story, and there’s no length for any of the character growth that is the underpinning for the entire series. It turns out that he also cut out almost all of the combat, and instead focused on fun resolutions or short stories about characters where he thought deserved more time. It’s more the ending to the series that we deserved, as the 11th and 12th books were action-heavy slogs with minimal focus on character resolution. It’s clear that Wight realizes some of his bigger mistakes, and went back to try and fix them.

It’s hard to get into a real review because some of the short stories are excellent and engaging, while others did nothing for me. Most of the main characters got an additional resolution, and a few side characters as well. I’d say about 75% of the stories were great, and 25% not so much.

I’m giving this one a 7. It’s worth the read, and most of the time is spent on stuff that would have made a much better last book than what we actually got.
