I just finished reading the fourth book of The Last Horizon series for the first time, and it was pretty ok! Will Wight is a master at including content and characters that I like enough to overlook stories that are kind of a mess. I find that his books rarely rate below a 6 for that reason alone, but don’t often make it above an 8 because they rely on being a part of a series instead of being just excellent on their own. Speaking of, this book is fine and gets a 5.
This book could have been great, yet all the good things could be better. Omega is a great character and we finally get his backstory, but it is pretty thin. We even meet his daughter, but don’t get to really see their history or prior relationship much at all. Solstice is a great villain, but I think the plot ends up being one of the weaker ways that this story could have gone. The fun dialogue and interplay between the crew is less present than usual, as this book feels like a long-running action scene with few breaks for character development.
At the end of the day, this book relies heavily on how fun The Last Horizon series has been so far to get its rating.
