Skysworn, the fourth book in the Cradle series, gets almost a cut-and-paste of the review from Cradle book 3. The book itself, particularly as an audiobook, has a lot of weakness that is covered up by being part of a good and fun series. It definitely hurts the reading experience for a fluff book to be unable to skim through the slower parts, but I’m hoping that these end up being two of the weaker entries in the series. I remember enjoying both of them more than I did this time around.
The strange thing I noticed this time around is that although the book is called Skysworn, the story line regarding the skysworn does not begin until the book is over halfway over. The first half of the book is really a wrap-up of the plot from the third book, and would probably have fit in better there. Wight clearly is writing to reach a certain page or chapter length in this series, as opposed to complete stories.
A big problem in this particular book is that this series hinges on the character progressing and becoming stronger, but that pretty much does not happen here. There is also not much dialogue between the more interesting characters, and only three scenes in the entire book that I found truly enjoyable. All in all, I’m closer to dropping this book to a 4 than I am to bumping it up to a 6. It is helped that the writing is still solid, the series is great, and the characters are enjoyable.
