Mother of Learning Arc 2

I mistakenly purchased books two through four of this series, and did not get around to returning them until that time had expired. Instead of dealing with the shame of having unread books in my Kindle, I am sucking it up and reading through this underwhelming series.

The best thing I can say for book two is that I don’t dislike it more than the first. While the first book focused on one conflict in one city, this second book expands the world and has our protagonist wander off to different places and meet new characters. Instead of being a sequence of interesting stories, it reads like one long, meandering and illogical training montage. One example – our protagonist meets a new elder magician, gets a few quests, eventually decide he doesn’t like a quest, and then never see that elder magician or talk about them again. Was it an interesting story line? Not really! Does it impact our overall story? Nope!
If that doesn’t seem concerning, then this might be the book for you.

The biggest upside to the book is our protagonist is growing more tolerable. He was just so unpleasant in the first book, and now he’s fairly devoid of personality. Sadly, that’s an improvement.

I will admit, I don’t hate my time reading this book. I don’t look forward to it, and am reading another one on the side as a palate cleanser, but it is readable. I’ll be generous and say this book is fine, and give it a 5 out of 10.
