There was a noticeable drop off between books 1 and 2, so I was hoping the series would at least plateau at being fine. Unfortunately, this book was a mild disaster. The worst part is, I liked the first book enough to be lazy and pre-buy the next five in the series, so now I have to hope that the writer figures this nonsense out, as I’m bought in for three more of these things.
Alright, so the fun part of progression fantasy is when characters get cool skills and level up – the whole role playing game thing. In this book, the writer focuses on six main characters, each of which have twenty abilities, that occasionally upgrade or change. Each skill has a paragraph or more of a description. So, in a 700 page book, it feels like there are 200 pages of skill explanations. Christ, what a mess. Thankfully, I am not listening to this book. I can skim liberally. Not only did I skip every skill description, there are also endless fight scenes that are more or less the same. I probably only read two hundred pages of this thing fully, because the rest of the book is garbage.
Given my ability to skim, I give this book a 3/10. There’s no reason to read this.
