This book took me a long time to work through, which I found interesting because I enjoyed it. Most books I am enjoying I fly through, but this somehow ended up as a bit of a slog.
The main characters are the same as from last book, and continue to be somewhat underwhelming. We get some more backstory here, but the main characters continue to be flat and underdeveloped.
Crime solving continues to be the main plotline, which is still pretty well done but noticeably less interesting than in the first novel. There’s also a ton more fake fantasy/science discussion, which kept making me want to put the book down. I like a nice, logical magic system that is neither stupidly simple nor overly complicated, and this series strays towards the second one.
With the continuing weakness of character and the drop off in strength of story, the second novel in the Shadow of the Leviathan series gets a 5. It’s fine, but nothing worth getting excited about. I may end up skipping the series from this point on. If a fantasy series isn’t fun to read, I might as well read a book that actually teaches me something.
