Mickey 17 was my wife’s movie pick, and I didn’t know anything about it when we started, but it’s a sci-fi movie with some dark comedic vibes. I’m just thrilled that she didn’t pick a horror movie with some dark comedic vibes again (I’m looking at you, The Substance).
Overall, the plot is fine. Mickey’s a clone, they fly in space to colonize a planet that has an alien species. It’s all pretty standard sci-fi stuff. The film adds some comedic twists that are more likely to make you smirk than laugh, which gave the movie a different feel than most other sci-fi films.
The acting is the best part of the film. It turns out Robert Pattinson is great, which I never knew before. Also, Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette are clearly enjoying themselves, although they both get a bit cartoony. Other than Mickey, the characters they play are pretty underdeveloped, which means I don’t really care what happens to anyone. For a movie to be only kind of funny, it would be nice to feel more invested in the outcome of the plot, or at least the resolution for some of the characters.
The running theme of the film is that everything kind of works, but nothing makes the film great. Overall, it’s a solid movie and gets a 6.
