After seeing multiple reviews online saying that Firefly is one of the best shows to only have one season, my wife and I decided to give it a try. After a somewhat slow start, I came around to seeing the appeal.
In the first few episodes, it felt like a bunch of actors that are normally in the good-to-great range were putting in some of their worst work. The production values are low, and the story started off a little bit clunky. I’m not totally sure if all of this improved over the course of the season, or I just started to notice it less as the stories and characters got more interesting. By the end, there were a variety of promising romantic or dramatic relationships being developed. Two main characters had major plot lines based on their mysterious back stories ready to go. The acting and writing had picked up, and then boom – end of show.
Like many first seasons, the start was rough, but there was a lot of potential to be great here. Unfortunately, as a standalone pilot season, the show only had room to reach the status of ‘good’.
