My wife and I watched Do the Right Thing a few months ago, so I came into this with some high expectations for a Spike Lee film. Also, it’s based off an Akira Kurosawa film as well? Throw Denzel Washington in the mix, and I am expecting a top tier film.
So, to be fair, I may have come in with expectations that were too high. Unfortunately, this movie felt like a version of Taken with a lot less action scenes, some clear anti-police perspective delivered with the subtlety of a brick to the face, and an unconventional soundtrack. I could also do with not watching Rick Fox act again for the rest of my life. It’s still not bad, and there are a lot of beautiful shots and scenes. Jeffrey Wright is great as well. The best scenes in the movie are where Denzel Washington is struggling internally with a difficult decision, but overall the plot is pretty straightforward.
This movie is at least somewhat worth watching, but there are way better Spike Lee movies, Denzel Washington movies, Akira Kurosawa films, and thrillers to pick from. If you want to mix all of them up together, the result is… fine.
