Andor Season 1

I was about to start the second season of Andor, so I tossed the start of the first season on to remind myself what had happened. Instead of a quick recap, I ended up watching the entire season again because it is so well done.

Andor’s first season has a high production value that is used to great effect. From large battles, to outfits, to cars and backgrounds – everything looks perfect for Star Wars.

The story is also excellent all the way through. This season follows a few different subplots, and nails them all. If they had wanted to, they could have broken this season into a few movies covering the main stories, and each would have been better than just about any Star Wars movie in the 21st century.

Most importantly in my mind, this show is brilliant at developing and showing interesting characters. Even characters that are only around briefly clearly have their own perspectives. One short scene that struck me is when we are introduced to Syril, as he is speaking with his commanding officer. You learn all about the officer’s perspective, the type of environment Syril works in, how much Syril wants to be in a different position, and how much he does not belong where he is at. It’s a master class in character work, and one that most recent Star Wars and Marvel properties desperately need to learn from. Time and again, they introduce new characters and I immediately feel that they are real people and care about how their stories unfold. Pair that with the story above, and you have a near-perfect season of TV.
