My love/hate relationship with this series is finally over, seven books in. He Who Fights with Monsters book 7 is not the worst in the series, but it is bad enough that I can comfortably lay this adventure to rest. As a side note, the Goodreads scores for these books are ridiculous. Even the books I liked in this series were massively overrated, but the bad books (which were truly bad) had almost the same rating. Goodreads is a near useless website, yet somehow still the best out there for books? Crazy.
The review kind of fits the series as a whole, as this one stands right in the middle as far as quality goes. There is some not particularly great writing that sets up a not super interesting fantasy stories, with characters that I should feel more invested in after seven books of reading. I don’t know if I truly like a single character in this series. To be fair, the writer often ends up having only 3-4 characters that he writes, he just changes the name of the person playing that character. There’s the zany person who doesn’t respect authority, some powerful person who respects them for that attitude, some powerful person who does NOT respect them for that attitude, and some normal person shaking their head over those antics. Yet for some reason, I feel compelled to read(skim) through the story anyway.
It’s a fine book for a progression fantasy series. 5 out of 10. If I’ve learned anything from the previous six books, the next two will be progressively worse, so I’m definitely out.
