The Secret Life of Pets

The Secret Life of Pets ended up being another movie we watched while traveling with our daughter. I remember thinking it was pretty mediocre when it came out, but that was pretty soon after I saw Zootopia. With almost a decade of time between viewings, I’m willing to go out on a limb and say this movie is very mediocre.

It’s a kids movie, and my daughter was happy to tell me every animal that showed up on the screen. That’s almost the entire list of positives for the film. It’s supposedly a comedy, but every dog/cat/whatever joke feels lazy. More importantly, Kevin Hart has a huge presence in this film, and does nothing but scream the entire time. I can’t handle an hour of Kevin Hart screaming nonsense, I only put this movie on so I could have a break from my daughter screaming nonsense. She’s at least cute and funny, what does Kevin Hart bring to the table here?

The plot is fairly coherent and there is some level of story, so that’s fine. It’s like a cartoony, less good Homeward Bound.

I give this movie a 4, I’d be pretty content with never seeing it again but it could have been worse.
