I hated the previous book in this series, but as I had purchased Book 4 already I felt like I should at least give it a shot. Thankfully, this book is the second best book in the series so far!
Almost all of the problems in the last book – the endless pages of skill descriptions and tedious fight scenes – have been removed. There are still some pages worth skimming through, but the majority of the book is interesting. At this point, my biggest issue is how often the protagonist whines about whether he is turning evil because he kills bad guys. There is no actual philosophy being discussed here, it is just boring filler. It’s been around since the start of the series, but it is both happening more frequently and more distracting as the rest of the book is better. The author has already created more interesting internal dilemmas for the character, particularly regarding some family members who have broken his trust in this past and how he should handle them in the future. Yet, we get this “Am I evil for killing murderers?” nonsense that has little to no place in a fantasy book. Just stop.
Overall, I flew through this book. It’s not great, but I’d say it is a good progression fantasy. There’s minimal actual progression here as well, so this book only gets by because it actually has some interesting plot points. 7/10.
