Hacks Season 1

My wife watched Hacks, and I saw enough amusing pieces as I would pass through the room to start my own round of watching. After one season, I am still unclear on whether I will make it through the whole series.

Jean Smart is excellent, and most of the characters are likeable. I’m rooting for them all, but this is one of those shows for audiences that like drama and fighting more than happiness. It seems like every time things are going well, they have to write a new piece of drama into the script. There’s also the occasional Meet The Parents type of awkwardness, which is my kryptonite. I can’t handle the super awkward scenes, but thankfully they are few and far between here.

As far as the plot, this whole season feels kind of like a pilot. It’s an entire season about trying to teach an old dog new tricks, which is simple enough that the show leans on interpersonal drama more than anything else.

I see the potential here, but so far this season is only a 6. It’s a solid start.
